Considerable attention has been given to organizational effectiveness in organizational behavior literature. Organizational effectiveness is the central theme in organizational theory. A theoretical framework of organizational effectiveness is needed that meets the following conditions:

  1. involves one level of analysis,
  2. integrates theoretical perspectives,
  3. resolves the problem of multiple criteria,
  4. provides assertions,
  5. recognizes the coalitional nature of organizations and the variability of criteria across time,
  6. provides an analytical tool, and
  7. defines effectiveness.

The theoretical framework of organizational effectiveness has several advantages:

  1. consistency in the level of analysis,
  2. integration of perspectives,
  3. multiplicity of criteria,
  4. relationships between criteria,
  5. coalitional, dynamic nature of organizations,
  6. comparisons across studies, and
  7. an explicit definition. The competing values approach to effectiveness will increase the understanding and awareness of these issues in the field of organizational behavior.
