Considerable attention has been given to organizational effectiveness in organizational behavior literature. Organizational effectiveness is the central theme in organizational theory. A theoretical framework of organizational effectiveness is needed that meets the following conditions:
- involves one level of analysis,
- integrates theoretical perspectives,
- resolves the problem of multiple criteria,
- provides assertions,
- recognizes the coalitional nature of organizations and the variability of criteria across time,
- provides an analytical tool, and
- defines effectiveness.
The theoretical framework of organizational effectiveness has several advantages:
- consistency in the level of analysis,
- integration of perspectives,
- multiplicity of criteria,
- relationships between criteria,
- coalitional, dynamic nature of organizations,
- comparisons across studies, and
- an explicit definition. The competing values approach to effectiveness will increase the understanding and awareness of these issues in the field of organizational behavior.
