Helping employees to cope with and understand the process and effects of staff reductions is essential to a company's financial recovery. As unpleasant and demoralizing as downsizing actions are, there are ways to ease the pain. Perhaps the fundamental issue is the belief that companies can manage a downsizing in such a way to reduce employee anxiety. To do so, there are 2 key requirements:
1. There must be a well-designed, proactive human resource strategy to support the downsizing.
2. That strategy must be supported by visible senior managers and sustained by sensitive supervisors.
Ways to regroup after downsizing include:
1. Acknowledge the need to regroup.
2. Enhance communications and visibility.
3. Revisit critical corporate values.
4. Prepare middle managers for their role in regrouping.
5. Empower middle managers with tactics for helping surviving employees adjust to changes.
6. Help employees let go of the old.
7. Involve people in building the new.
